CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Nora's insides twisted with a familiar sense of dread as they pulled into the driveway of Emily's family home. They lived in Busselton, a small town located about fifty minutes away from Emily's apartment on one side and thirty-five minutes from Osborne on the other.

The drive was quiet, both Nora and Jason lost in their own thoughts about the case. Nora knew Jason was just as frustrated as she was with the lack of movement in the case, a point they did not need to belabor.

Darkness cloaked the surroundings in an eerie silence. The house loomed before them, its silhouette a stark contrast against the moonlit sky. The windows were dark, with no sign of life stirring within. The only illumination came from the soft glow of the streetlights, casting long shadows across the lawn.

The front porch stood empty and still, the wooden steps leading up to it creaking softly underfoot as they approached. A sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air, as if the very atmosphere were holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

The house itself appeared ordinary enough, with a simple yet sturdy facade and neatly trimmed hedges lining the perimeter. But in the dead of night, with no one stirring inside, it took on an almost ghostly quality, its quiet presence looming over the neighborhood like a watchful custodian.

As Jason and Nora stood before the house, a chill ran down her spine, sending a shiver through her body. Nora shuddered, a physical reaction to both the night air and the thought of having to tell Emily’s family what had happened to her. She exchanged a wary glance with Jason, knowing the gravity of what they had before them. With a deep breath, they steeled themselves for what lay ahead, as ready as they could be to have one of the most difficult conversations of their careers.

Nora hung back as Jason rang the doorbell. A dog immediately began barking in response, as if to tell them to go away. Nora listened as the house buzzed to life, lights turning on as the inhabitants returned from their dreamscapes.

"I'll take the lead," Jason said, his voice just above a whisper.

Nora hated that he felt he had to carry the emotional burden this job required, but she was grateful he was willing to do it.

They both checked their clothes, straightening them quickly and smoothing out wrinkles from the car ride and exhausting, never-ending day.

Suddenly, the porch light turned on above them. Nora blinked a few times in an effort to adjust to the abrupt change. She heard two deadbolt locks click and watched as the door creaked open to reveal a couple in their early fifties stared back at them.

“Mr. and Mrs. Parsons?” Jason asked as he held up his FBI credentials.

“Yes?” Mr. Parsons answered as Mrs. Parsons clung to her husband, fear filling her sleepy face.

“May we please come in?”

“Um, yeah, of course,” Mr. Parsons nodded. His voice sounded almost as confused as he looked.

As Jason and
